How to Give a Newborn a Bath Step by Step

Bathing a newborn can be a delicate and rewarding experience. Here is a step-by-step guide to ensure your baby’s bath time is safe and enjoyable.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need within reach:

  • Baby bathtub or clean sink
  • Mild baby soap and shampoo
  • Soft washcloths
  • Soft towel
  • Clean diaper and clothes
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • A cup for rinsing

Step 2: Prepare the Bath Area

Fill the baby bathtub or sink with a few inches of warm water. The ideal water temperature should be around 37°C (98.6°F). Test the water with your wrist or elbow to ensure it’s not too hot or too cold.

Step 3: Undress Your Baby

Carefully undress your baby, removing the diaper last. Clean the diaper area if necessary before placing your baby in the bath.

Step 4: Gently Place Your Baby in the Water

Support your baby’s head and neck with one hand and their bottom with the other as you slowly lower them into the water. Keep your baby’s head above water at all times.

Step 5: Clean Your Baby

Using a soft washcloth, gently clean your baby’s face and neck. Be sure to clean behind the ears and under the chin. Use cotton balls or pads to clean around the eyes.

Next, wash your baby’s body with mild baby soap. Pay attention to skin folds, where dirt and lint can accumulate. Rinse with a cup of warm water, ensuring all soap is washed off.

Step 6: Wash the Hair

If needed, wash your baby’s hair with a small amount of mild baby shampoo. Gently massage the scalp and rinse carefully, avoiding getting water in their eyes.

Step 7: Rinse and Dry

Once your baby is clean, use the cup to gently pour warm water over their body to rinse off any remaining soap. Lift your baby out of the water, supporting their head and neck, and wrap them in a soft towel.

Step 8: Dry and Dress Your Baby

Pat your baby dry with the towel, ensuring all skin folds are thoroughly dried. Apply diaper cream if needed, put on a clean diaper, and dress your baby in clean clothes.

Additional Tips

  • Bath Frequency: Newborns do not need a daily bath. Two to three times a week is sufficient, with sponge baths in between as needed.
  • Safety First: Never leave your baby unattended during bath time. Always keep one hand on your baby to prevent slipping.
  • Comfort: Talk or sing to your baby to make bath time a soothing and enjoyable experience.

By following these steps, you can ensure your newborn’s bath time is safe, comfortable, and bonding experience for both of you.
