6 Signs The Baby Can’t Breathe

What is it that makes new parents stay awake in the night? What do they constantly keep checking for? Yes, there are many things that might worry a parent. But, here, we are talking about the concern of whether the little one is breathing. More often than not, we find ourselves worrying about this. That is why not many parents catch a lot of sleep in the beginning. With the fear of the Sudden Death Infant Syndrome (SIDS) among parents and doctors alike, the concern is pretty real. However, at times, it can be really hard to figure out whether the baby is breathing. Unless you closely observe the chest movements or stick a finger right under the nose opening, it is not that easy to determine. It is even more tough to understand if he/she is breathing in a proper manner. Here, we bring you some signs to look out for:

  1. Face Becomes Blue

This is one of the most universal ways to check whether the little one is breathing. Observe the color of their face. Is it pale pink? Or does the skin have a blue or purplish tinge to it? If you see that their lips are turning blue in color, it might be a sign that they are not receiving adequate oxygen. Our skin color looks the way it does because of the oxygen present in the blood. And, the face loses its color only when that supply is cut off. So, if you can see a change in color, go to the doctor immediately.

  1. Too Quiet

Don’t newborns generally move a lot? The reality is that babies can be pretty noisy and jumpy. You will find the infants moving their legs and arms constantly. But, if you notice that the little one is not moving even a little bit. And, is not even responding to your jostles. Then there are chances that something might be wrong, so seek medical care immediately. If the concern is regarding their breathing movements, you can gently place your fingers on the tummy. That would be more than enough to observe his/her movement without causing any disturbance.

  1. Timing Is Everything

When it comes to breathlessness, timing is everything. If you need to get help for any breathing issues, you need to do so immediately. As staying without a breath for a long time might cause some damage. So, the moment you notice something odd, seek help as soon as possible. And, be on the lookout for such signs.

  1. Check The Nostrils

Apart from looking at the skin, you also need to watch the nostrils. Babies and newborns generally breath in from their nose and don’t use the mouth at all. Usually, they learn how to breathe through their mouth gradually. But, if you notice them flaring the nostrils, this means that they want more air. This, in turn, means that they are not getting enough already and have to expand their nostrils to take more air in.

  1. Not Eating Anything

As mentioned earlier, babies are generally nose breathers. And, this is essential for them to be able to feed properly. This is one of the natural survival weapons that they are born with. However, if their nose is blocked and they are not getting enough oxygen, they might refuse to eat. So, if you notice this, then there might be something wrong.

  1. Frustrated

If you have suffered from a cold, you would know how difficult it can be to breathe through the nose. This is even more so for the newborns who can’t even express their discomfort to someone. This might frustrate them a little bit. So, if you find them being too fussy or frustrated, then something might be wrong.

If you notice something odd, don’t panic and seek medical care. Everything will be alright!
